A. Rodríguez, head of the UNP, says he "did everything he had to do" and that Miguel Uribe and his security detail "made negative decisions."

From Caloto, Cauca, the director of the National Protection Unit (UNP), Augusto Rodríguez , stated that the entity " did everything it had to do " to protect senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who has been hospitalized for more than a month after being the victim of an attack in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá.
He also suggested that the congressman and his security detail made poor decisions . "They attack the government; they say the president is responsible for polarizing the situation. They say the UNP didn't act as it should have, that there was negligence. When the UNP —I say this and affirm this on this land that is sacred to me —did everything it had to do: it did its duty, it complied with all the protocols, it provided the security personnel with their weapons and the latest model vehicles . Miguel Uribe himself, and suddenly, in conversation with his security chief, they came to some decisions that were a bit negative," the official said.

This theory had already been expressed by the director of the UNP in an interview with El País América : "He made decisions that weakened his security and that were wrong. He decided, along with his security chief, to split the protection scheme and extend it to his family. He ordered some men to stay with his family and others with him. That shouldn't be done," he commented.
The Democratic Center party has been clashing with the UNP over the murder of one of its most prominent members. In fact, the party's director, Gabriel Vallejo, reported that Senator Uribe Turbay had requested more than 20 times from the UNP director to strengthen his security detail.
He also asked the Attorney General's Office to investigate alleged "stigmatization" by the UNP against party members, due to issues related to their personal safety.
Rodríguez's statement was quickly challenged by Senator Carlos Meisel . "He uses his interventions not to provide solutions, but to explain his failures. The government's claim that Miguel Uribe was responsible for his own attack is nothing more than the evident incompetence of this government in every aspect. It's completely false. We, as the opposition, have made several requests to the director of the UNP himself, and they haven't paid any attention to us, and our lives remain at risk because of their negligence ," he said.

Meisel added, "We have major problems with UNP members' breaks, and no one is paying attention to us. So, don't be so irresponsible as to blame Miguel for the same problem, which has him hovering between life and death today ."
Miguel Uribe's family took legal action after the attack On June 9, attorney Víctor Mosquera emphasized that, as a representative of the family of presidential candidate Miguel Uribe, he filed a complaint against UNP director Augusto Rodríguez for the attack he suffered during a political event.
The criminal lawyer told the media that he filed a criminal complaint against the head of the National Protection Unit (UNP) due to alleged failures by the entity to safeguard the member of the Democratic Center.

"We filed a criminal complaint against the director of the UNP, based on the fact that during 2025 we made more than 23 requests for increased protection, the last one being submitted on June 5 of this year. These requests established why the senator and presidential candidate should be given adequate protection," Mosquera said.
The lawyer then stated that in 2023, the UNP had classified Senator Miguel Uribe as an extraordinary risk, however, the same entity in 2024 "did not take into account that in October he was already a presidential candidate, and therefore his security conditions should have been improved. This is very serious, because we have to investigate whether these events occurred due to omission. Since June 5 of this year, it was known that the candidate's security had to be reinforced. The most serious thing is that he simply received copy-and-paste responses of everything he had been told before."
